It’s the summer, so the chances are you're going overseas for a well-deserved holiday. Or maybe you’re travelling for business. The Signal experts have put together a blog of our top advice when going abroad. Have a read below 🔽
Apps to make your life easier
While you’re away there are apps to make your life that little bit easier. For getting around there are 3 key apps.
- Google Maps - Before you visit a certain location you will be able to download maps via Wi-Fi. This will ensure you won't have to use your mobile data when using the app abroad.
- City Mapper – Going to a city? This app should be top of your list. It shows you the best way to get from A to B in a city you're unfamiliar with. Enter your destination and the app will suggest a range of routes, whether it be public transport, walking or cycling. The app uses mobile data. It’s available in cities around the globe from Venice to Sao Paulo. Learn more by clicking HERE.
- Uber – A transportation app that allows you to book a taxi on your smartphone for a fair price. Uber is available in over 10,000 cities around the world, so the chances are its available in your destination. Once you have selected your journey option, payment is made on the app through debit or credit card.
Cruises – connecting to maritime network
When going on a cruise, do not risk data roaming and turn it off. You are at major risk of connecting to the maritime network or connecting to a neighbouring international country, if data roaming is enabled.
It’s possible to rack up an expensive bill without even realising. The networks are often reluctant to offer any support with these overcharges.
What can you do to prevent this? We recommend turning off roaming and making use of the Wi-Fi options on board. You could also just use your roaming on dry land days, when you know the rules for the country that you’re in.

Know your network
Things have recently changed. EU Roaming is not included on the EE, Vodafone and 3 network.
O2 on the other hand, still include Roam Like At Home for free, so you can use your domestic allowance in their Europe Zone. As an O2 Direct Partner, we can get you set up with stress free Europe Roaming today. If you travel for business, O2 is the network for you. If you have any questions on roaming, get in touch with our support team on 01642 713 667 or email css@signaltelecom.co.uk. |
Messaging back home
When you’re abroad you will likely want to get in touch with friends and family back at home. We recommend connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot and using one of the following messaging apps:
Be sure to connect to Wi-Fi, as these apps use the internet to send and receive messages. They are a perfect alternative to standard text messages - which can cause overspend. These apps will use mobile data when not connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot, so be careful. |
You don't have to roam
Instead of roaming you could just make use of Wi-Fi hotspots, which are located in hotels, restaurants and other public places. This will eliminate all risks of unwanted over spend.
If you decide to use this strategy, turn roaming off in your phone settings. You can find out how to turn off data roaming on iPhone HERE and for Android click HERE.
